iMac Firmware Fuck-UP... ;-(
This is what happened, all the iMac's came with os 9.1 Ok?..... And this is the funny quark that the 350 mhz first slot load macs has... wow get ready guys... man... OK !! I wanted to install OS X on it... So i pop the CD in and reboot holding the " c " key that tells open firmware to boot from the Optical Drive... So anyway, it boots just as it should, well kinda slow because it only has 128 ram, Anyways, It gets to the first install screen asking you to select your language, and i did... Then it comes up with a screen that says " This Mac's Firmware is not up to-date " Please update... and then it gives a restart button. So i said ok cool... hit it and it went to a blank screen and sits there. Well after like 5 min i am like WTF... its still at this screen. So i do what anyone would do... I hold the power button for 10 seconds and it shuts down... Aint no harm in that... RIGHT???!??! hehehe...
Well so i think to my self... Lets boot this puppy back into os 9.1 and update the Ol Firmware then... well i hit the power button and i got no screen... Totally Blank... I herd the Mac Bong... and i hear the hard drive goin ... so i *ASSUMED* that maybe i fried the monitor capacitors(not un-common)(because of heat issues sometimes) because i set the imac on the bed at my moms house to work on it (blocking the ventilation). It was very hot so i let it cool and still NO screen. So i said oh well i fried it and took it apart!.
And Turned out pretty ok because i used a few parts to make some other macs look better and sell for more.
However... I have a total of 4 of those(iMac 350 *pre* Firewire) So here it goes... I tried to install panther on another one just like the one that i thought i TOASTED... And it did the same fucking thing... I thought HEY what the hell is going on here.
So i did some digging online... and sure enough... You know that fine print that you never read ... it says in the " Before you install OS X " Documentation that Warning if you install os-x and you do not have the latest firmware, bad things can happen (basically) :) and yes It had appeared that something bad had happened... MY screen is blank.!!! I guess if you get technical the os x with the older firmware does something to the video that in turn sends a signal that the monitor cant understand.. i am sure all you pc guys had have had similar when you attach a shitty older monitor to a newer pc and when it gets to windows it says monitor out of range if its a nice one or its just blank... just like the iMac...
So what i ended up doing, (reading the various fixes for this syndrome) pulling out the hard drive ... throwing it in a mac that works, putting a mac VNC server on it and then throwing it back in... and doing a firmware update from a remote computer... then it reboots and WALA you have screen again... It was kind of a lengthy fix but its funny how i assumed and i was wrong... but at-least I made a ass out of my self and not anyone else LOL I guess the moral of the story is read the "before you install docs?" ;-) Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa lol.
